To permanently document the controversy around Monet's painting at the Museum of Fine Arts, over July 2015, Azita Moradkhani paints, a fellow artist's, Jeremy Endo's body in Camille's Uchikake- appearing almost like tattoos down his right side. After 6 hours of painting the body, Jeremy stands in a antique wash basin and attempts to scratch, peel, and rub away the kimono with hot sake. The remaining marks pose the question, can we move beyond orientalism and exoticism in American contemporary culture ? Currently I am working on a female body cast with an image of a fetus drawn on the abdomen. The fetus on the abdomen is surrounded by drawings originated from Iranian traditional floral patterns called “Golo Morgh”. This piece is a part of an installation where the floral patterns drawn on the body casts spread onto the wall and become natural objects themselves: plants, leaves, branches. As photography became more democratized and made its way to the Middle-East, the medium was used by some to capture a cultural taboo to be used for pleasure. Freedom and womanhood have been in conflict over time throughout the world. Justice has always been an idealised theory in societies that have consistently failed to apply it evenly and fairly.
